The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care Joins Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus
June 30, 2008 (BUFFALO, NY) - At its quarterly meeting this June, the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (BNMC) Board of Directors voted unanimously in favor of the The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care becoming a member of the corporation.
"We are very pleased to welcome The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care as a member of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus," said William Joyce, chair of the BNMC Board of Directors. "The organization is a natural fit with two locations on or near the BNMC, including the new St. John Baptist/Hospice Buffalo House in the Fruit Belt, which serves as a national model for hospice outreach and access to care in underserved communities. The mission of CHPC lends itself to collaborative activities which will improve the clinical, research, and educational opportunities for the other members of the BNMC as well as the community as a whole."
"Partnering with the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus will allow us to leverage our local health care resources to improve care for our community," said William Finn, President and CEO of CHPC, one of nation's largest and innovative hospice and palliative care organizations. "With BNMC, we can improve access to care, and better provide the right level of care in the right setting at the right time."
The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care serves individuals with serious illness and their families and caregivers through a continuum of care spanning the course of illness and bereavement. The Center's specially-trained professionals, support staff, and volunteers assist individuals to make choices about their care, support those who are grieving, and educate the professional and lay communities about end-of-life care.
The BNMC, a not-for-profit organization founded in 2001 by key health care and research institutions, the City of Buffalo, and neighborhood stakeholders, serves as the single entity charged with collaboratively planning, coordinating, and implementing projects and programs for the institutions that comprise the medical campus. The BNMC is dedicated to the cultivation of a world-class medical campus for clinical care, research, education, and entrepreneurship on 120 acres in downtown Buffalo. It is home to the region's top clinical, research, and medical education institutions, including: the University at Buffalo, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Olmsted Center for the Visually Impaired, Kaleida Health, Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute, Buffalo Medical Group, Buffalo Hearing & Speech Center, Upstate New York Transplant Services, and The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care.
More than 8,500 people come to work at the medical campus every day. Together, the BNMC institutions host over one million patient visits annually and account for approximately $1.5 billion in economic impact each year. The medical campus consists of more than 4.5 million square feet of research, clinical, and support space. www.bnmc.org
